Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing is cool, creamy and super easy to make with mayo, sour cream and a few other ingredients. Perfect for salads or dipping!

This easy homemade buttermilk ranch dressing is made with mayo, buttermilk and sour cream, plus herbs and spices. It also has Italian seasoning for an extra flavor boost. Once you start making your own homemade salad dressing, you won’t want to go back to store bought stuff!

We usually try to buy organic dressing, but that can get expensive, especially when you consider the amount that we go through. Since we almost always have the ingredients on hand to make homemade ranch, this is much cheaper. Plus, it’s so easy too and really tastes so much better than what you buy in the store!

It’s funny how the kids gobble up the veggies if they can dip them in dressing. I know my little guy would pour ranch over just about anything if I let him — he absolutely loves the stuff! Personally, I’ve always been more of a vinaigrette fan, and I usually pass up the ranch, unless it’s homemade. Then, I do what the kiddos do and dig right in!

My buttermilk ranch dressing is slightly different from other homemade ranch dressing recipes or the Hidden Valley buttermilk ranch dressing recipe because I add Italian seasoning. You can always leave this out for a more traditional ranch dressing flavor. But since it’s something we always have around, I end up adding to so many different recipes.

We use this buttermilk ranch dressing on salads and as a dip for veggies, pizza crusts, fries — pretty much everything! I also add it to my Mississippi roast and chicken bacon ranch pasta. It also goes well as a dressing for sandwiches and wraps.

What’s the difference between ranch and buttermilk ranch?

The original ranch dressing recipe used buttermilk, but you really don’t need it to get that awesome ranch dressing flavor. In fact, I often use regular milk when I make my usual ranch and just add less of it.

How to make homemade buttermilk ranch dressing

Start out by mixing mayonnaise and sour cream together in a bowl. Then, stir in some chopped fresh parsley. You can transfer the dressing to a jar later, but it’s much easier to mix in a bowl!

Next, add dried onions, garlic, salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Mix it up until everything is well blended.

Then add the buttermilk. You can add more to make it thinner or leave it as is for a thicker ranch dressing. You can also adjust the amount of seasonings to fit your own tastes.

Personally, I like a thinner dressing, so I end up adding more buttermilk before serving.  The Hubs likes it thicker, so he takes his before I add the extra buttermilk. It’s all about compromise!

How long does homemade buttermilk ranch dressing last?

It should last 3 to 4 days in the fridge.

I have been looking for an easy ranch recipe. In a pinch, I just add buttermilk to a good quality ranch dressing from the cold section of the store, but this is almost as easy. Thanks!
