Hi Friends! A couple of weeks ago, I whipped up a batch of homemade citrus salt scrub to help get our skin ready for summer, and believe me, that stuff works! But while the salt scrub is awesome for heels and elbows, I wanted to try something softer for everything else. So over the weekend, the girls and I did some experimenting, and we came up with a gentle, refreshing lavender peppermint sugar scrub.

When I first made the salt scrub, I heard from a lot of people who recommended sugar scrubs, and to be honest, I had never tried sugar scrub before. Weird, huh! I was always afraid those would be too sticky or gooey, but of course, I was so wrong. Now I know why so many people recommended sugar scrubs, and I’m so glad I gave this a try.
I’ve also been experimenting more with essential oils, and I am definitely finding some favorites — like peppermint. I love the way it smells, and it’s so refreshing too. And lavender — clean, pure, and not at all heavy like the some of the scented products you’ll find in the stores. I’m usually sensitive to heavy perfumes and scents, so Iavender oil was a nice surprise!
Making the sugar scrub was easy, and the only thing I had to buy was coconut oil, which I thought would work better than olive oil with the scents I wanted to use.
Ingredients
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup organic coconut oil
- 4 drops lavender essential oil
- 2 drops peppermint essential oil
This was easier than making salt scrub, since the sugar granules were already the right size. I just mixed all of the ingredients together and spooned the concoction into a small half-pint jar. I used solid coconut oil and melted it slightly so that it was easier to mix.
I also added a thin purple ribbon around the mouth of the jar for decoration, and voila — this project was done!
The girls and I absolutely love our homemade sugar scrub, and it works like a charm to soften the skin without being too abrasive. Plus, it smells divine. There’s the fresh scent of lavender with just a hint of peppermint, for a slight pick-me-up. And best of all, there are no artificial ingredients.
You could add more oils for a stronger fragrance, but since I don’t like heavy scents, this was just the right amount for me. Of course, if you have a fragrance that you prefer, you could use that instead of the oils. For Christmas, we made these scrubs:

The girls and I had so much fun making the lavender peppermint sugar scrub that we had to try another combo too, and I’ll show you that one another day. We have a lot of events coming up, from Mother’s Day to birthdays and graduations, and homemade sugar and salt scrubs always make great gifts. So, that’s a great excuse for us to go make some more!

Just wondering if you use the regular solid coconut oil or liquid? Or do you melt the solid stuff down a bit? Sorry, I’m still very new to organic and DIY things. lol
I used the liquid and heated it up just slightly in the microwave so that it would be easier to mix.
How much does this recipe make?
This fills a half-pint mason jar, but you can easily make more if you’re giving them as gifts for a lot of people.
About to make this!! Thanks for posting it. I am using a plastic container just because I have this feeling glass in the shower will be a bad idea. However, I have always seen glass jars for homemade scrubs highlighted as the best container to use. Any concerns with glass in the shower? Thanks for posting this recipe. What I do is make the scrub in a glass container and scoop out what I need into a small plastic glass to use in the shower — much safer! Hope this helps! 🙂
I made some and in two days it smelled like it went bad. I could smell the essential oils I used but its smells a little like spoiled milk, did I do something wrong? I added melted coconut oil used for cooking, pure cane sugar and jasmine essential oil. Where am I supposed to store it?
Hmm. I’ve never used jasmine essential oil before, so maybe it just smells different? I always keep my scrubs in the bathroom cabinet, and they’re fine. What type/brand of oils did you use? That might be a factor, as well.
