This simple dog cake recipe is easy to make and perfect for celebrating a dog’s birthday or gotcha day. Our pups love it, and yours will, too!

Simple Dog Birthday Cake
Our dogs are definitely part of the family, so we have always celebrated their birthdays. Before the kids were born, I even went all out and bought invitations and party supplies for our fur kid! These days, we make a dog-safe cake for our rescue dogs on their birthdays and gotcha days.
We already make homemade dog treats and dog food, so of course, they have to have a special dessert on their special day. The cake is super simple and made with peanut butter, pumpkin and carrots — some of their favorite flavors. We also frost it with a blend of whipped cream and peanut butter. My daughter even started adding a few pieces of crumbled bacon for sprinkles!
Ingredient Notes
Here’s what you need to make a birthday cake for dogs and for the frosting. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.
- Flour — all purpose is fine
- Egg — binds the ingredients together
- Baking soda — helps the cake to rise
- Coconut oil — you can substitute vegetable oil or olive oil
- Applesauce — unsweetened
- Pumpkin puree — don’t get the pie filling by mistake
- Peanut butter — make sure to use regular and not the kind with xylitol or birch bark as that is not safe for pets.
- Carrot — adds a little sweetness
- Whipping cream — for the frosting. You can omit this if you have a different topping in mind.
How to Make a Homemade Dog Cake
This pup cake is made just like a regular cake. You just combine wet and dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Then, spread the batter in an 8-inch cake pan, and bake. When the cake cools, you can frost it with a simple peanut butter whipped cream frosting. My daughter even piped a scalloped border and the number nine with frosting.
Recipe Tip
Be sure to spread the cake batter evenly in the prepared pan as it does not spread much while baking.
Storage
Store the cake in the refrigerator and store leftovers in an airtight container. It keeps for 4-5 days, but you can freeze the doggie cake for up to 3 months. Leftovers never last that long here!
