Egg in a hole is toast with a perfectly cooked fried egg in the center. Super easy recipe — crispy, buttery bread, soft egg, ready in minutes!

So, what do you call toast with egg in the middle? We have always called this easy breakfast recipe toad-in-a-hole, but most people call it egg in hole or egg in toast. Some folks call it egg in a basket or egg in nest or even frog in a hole.
We have been making this egg in toast recipe for years. My picky kids have always liked scrambled eggs or deviled eggs, and this is the only way I could get the kids to eat fried eggs, besides breakfast sandwiches or fried egg sandwiches.
Why you’ll love this family favorite recipe!

We make our eggs in hole a little different from most recipes. We use a loaf of crusty bread, like French bread or sourdough bread instead of sandwich bread for extra crispiness.
And, we make hard cooked eggs instead of over easy, as most of us do not like runny yolks. But, I’ll show you how to get the eggs cooked to your liking.
Egg in Hole Ingredients

This is a 3 ingredient recipe, as you can add preferred seasoning later. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.
- Eggs — We usually do 4 or 5, but you can use more or less.
- Butter — for flavor when frying. Helps get those crispy edges everyone loves!
- Loaf of Bread — thick bread, like a loaf of sourdough bread. Texas toast will also work.
How to Make Egg in Toast
First, slice the bread into slices about 1 inch thick. Tear out part of the middle, leaving some bread on the sides and ends. You can use a round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter, but I think oval openings work better for this shape of bread.

You can use a skillet or griddle to cook the eggs in toast. It really depends on how much you are making. You just melt some butter, and toast the bread on 1 side. Then, flip the bread, add the eggs, and cook a little more.

Flip the bread one more time, and cook until you have golden brown toast and the eggs reach your desired doneness.
What to Serve with Egg in a Hole Toast
While the crispy, buttery bread with egg is good on its own, you can always add your favorite toppings to make it even better. We like to add sliced avocado, micro greens or sprouts, cheese, hot sauce, tomato slices and a little salt and pepper. Fresh fruit always rounds out the meal!

Tips for Egg in Bread Recipe
Cook over medium to medium-low heat so the eggs and toast cook evenly.
To easily flip the bread, slide a spatula under the toast and give it a quick flip. No hesitations!
For sunny side up eggs, do not flip the bread after adding the eggs.
