Easy Candy Apple Dessert

As much as we love traditional caramel apples, apple slices topped with caramel and candies are so much easier to eat! Just make the caramel sauce, prepare the apples, pour and dig in!

This easy caramel apple recipe is the perfect fall treat for family gatherings, movie nights or Halloween parties. It also makes a yummy after school snack — My kids love it!

Ingredients

granny smith apples, lemon, caramel sauce and mini m and m's candy

Here are the basics. You can find full amounts with detailed instructions in the printable recipe card below.

  • Green apples — I use Granny Smith apples, but any tart apple variety will work. Soft apples don’t hold up as well and sweet apples will make this fun dessert too sweet.
  • Caramel sauce — Melt a package of caramel candies of caramel bits, or use homemade caramel sauce
  • Lemon juice — to prevent apple slices from turning brown. You can also use lime juice or lemon lime soda, like Sprite
  • Candies — Mini M&M’s or any small candies for topping

How to Make Caramel Apple Nachos

First, make the caramel sauce. Follow directions on the package of caramel candies to melt the caramels. You can use your microwave or the stove top.

Next, rinse, core and cut apples into even slices. No need to peel the apples unless you want to. Leaving the apple peel on tastes more like the traditional candy apple dessert!

apple slices on a white platter

Brush apple slices with lemon juice, and arrange them neatly on a large platter. You can layer the slices, but be sure not to cover each layer completely.

Next, drizzle melted caramel evenly on top of the apples. Thin ribbons of caramel work best for caramel nachos!

drizzle caramel sauce over sliced apples

Sprinkle candies and fall sprinkles on top of the caramel. You can use chocolate syrup or melt chocolate chips and white chocolate chips to drizzle chocolate over the apple slices, as well. Serve these delicious dessert nachos, and dig right into the gooey caramel topped apples.

The great thing about this simple recipe is you can add as many of your favorite toppings as you want. It’s actually a great recipe for using up Halloween candy!

Variations

Use caramel apple bits in place of the caramel squares. You can use a jar of caramel sauce or caramel ice cream topping as long as it’s thick. A bottle of squeezable caramel will be too runny to hold the candies.

Use a mix of red apples and green apples for a pop of color.

Have an apple nacho bar. Serve the warm caramel sauce in a bowl, and place toppings in separate bowls so folks can build their own easy apple nachos!

What are Good Toppings for Apple Nachos?

You can top the nachos with anything you would use for caramel apples. Add toffee bits, chopped nuts, chopped candy bars, mini chocolate chips, mini marshmallows or melted marshmallows.

Can you Store the Leftover Apples?

Caramel-topped apple slices are best eaten the same day. However, you can refrigerate leftover apple nachos in an airtight container for up to 1 day. Refrigerate any leftover caramel sauce for up to 3 weeks. You can reheat the caramel on low heat on the stove, stirring frequently until smooth.

Tips for Foolproof Apple Nachos

Dip apple slices in lemon juice so they won’t turn brown.

To make this apple dessert ahead of time, slice and store fresh apples dipped in lemon juice in the refrigerator up to a day ahead of time. Place the sliced apples in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Pat them dry, and prepare the nachos as usual.

Take the easy way out, and top with good quality caramel sauce like Torani sauce or Ghirardelli caramel sauce.
