This is my latest version of the popular sweet treat known as puppy chow or muddy buddies. And, to be clear, this fluffernutter puppy chow recipe is definitely for people and not for pups!

If you’ve never heard of fluffernutter, it’s a sandwich made with a layer of marshmallow cream and a layer of peanut butter. We simply used these ingredients plus chocolate for a new and very tasty salty and sweet puppy chow variation.

Fluffer Nutter Muddy Buddies Ingredients

rice chex, chocolate chips, peanut butter, marshmallows, butter, vanilla, sugar.

Here are the basics. Full amounts are listed in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Butter
  • Peanut butter
  • Marshmallow cream — also known as marshmallow fluff
  • Semi sweet chocolate chips
  • Vanilla extract — adds flavor
  • Rice Chex cereal
  • Powdered sugar
  • Mini marshmallows

How to Make Fluffernutter Puppy Chow

First, melt the butter and chocolate chips in a large bowl in the microwave in 30-second increments. Stir after each interval until melted. Then, add the vanilla and marshmallow cream into the chocolate mixture, and mix in the cereal. Use a gallon freezer bag to coat the cereal mixture and the marshmallows in powdered sugar.

Muddy Buddy Tips

Always melt chocolate in short intervals, and gently stir in between intervals until it melts. Otherwise, it will seize.

Add some of the powdered sugar to the bottom of the bag and the top so it’s easier to coat the cereal mixture when you shake it.

Store muddy buddies in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 week. You can freeze puppy chow for up to 3 months.

Variations

If you want a sweeter version, you can leave out the chocolate and use only peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.

You can use Corn Chex instead of Rice Chex.

Try adding mini peanut butter chips or mini peanut butter cups to the cereal mixture. You can also throw in some Reese’s pieces.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 2 minutes
Total Time: 17 minutes
Servings: 18

Ingredients

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 7 oz marshmallow fluff
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 10 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, melt the semi sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter together in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval
  • Add in the marshmallow fluff and vanilla extract, and stir until fully combined
  • Add in Rice Chex cereal and mix with a rubber spatula until cereal is evenly coated in the chocolate mixture
  • Place half of the powdered sugar in a large ziplock freezer bag. Add the cereal mixture, remaining powdered sugar and marshmallows. Seal bag and shake until the cereal is evenly covered in powdered sugar
  • Transfer the mixture into a serving bowl

Notes

Can use smooth or creamy peanut butter for this recipe.
Always melt chocolate in short intervals, and stir after each microwave interval to avoid the chocolate seizing.
Use a soft rubber spatula and gently mix the Rice Chex cereal into the melted chocolate mixture to avoid crumbling or breaking the cereal.
Instead of adding all the powdered sugar at once, add in half of the powdered sugar to the bottom of the ziplock baggie before adding in the chocolate covered cereal mixture and remaining sugar for easier distribution.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
