Why you’ll love this Halloween meatloaf recipe!

It’s easy to make and decorate with simple ingredients. I use one of my favorite recipes for the loaf, but you can also use your favorite recipe here.

ground beef, crescent roll dough and meatloaf ingredients.

Ingredient Notes

This is a quick overview of what you need to make it. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Ground beef — 80/20 blend works best as it keeps the meat nice and moist.
  • Oats — acts as a binder without using breadcrumbs or cracker crumbs.
  • Ketchup — a little to flavor the loaf and a little for the top
  • Eggs — to help bind the meat
  • Worcestershire sauce — for that classic flavor
  • Spices — salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder
  • Crescent roll dough — to make the “bandages”
  • Mozzarella balls — for the eye balls
  • Green olives — Sliced into rounds for the eyes
  • Red bell pepper — Cut into small slices for the mouth

How to Make a Halloween Meatloaf Mummy

First, you make and shape the loaf. Then, place the loaf in a 9×13 pan, and brush a little ketchup on top. Bake the meatloaf, then place strips of dough on top of the meatloaf to form the bandages — make sure you leave a space for the eyeballs. Bake a little longer until the dough is golden brown. Then, add the eyes and mouth before serving.

Recipe Tips

Mix the eggs first, and don’t over mix the meatloaf mixture. This will keep it nice and juicy.

Test the temperature with a meat thermometer to make sure the loaf is close to 160 before adding the dough. The meatloaf will cook a little longer and should be 160 degrees or above when done.

A little extra ketchup is all you need on top. You don’t want a heavy glaze here because the dough strips won’t stick. You can add a little extra ketchup before serving.

Let the meatloaf rest about 5 minutes before serving. I like to use a bread knife when slicing up the loaf to keep the slices nice and even.

Serving Suggestions

I suggest serving this spooky meatloaf with mashed potatoes as a side. If you’re looking for more Halloween recipes to serve, I suggest graveyard cake, cake pops or these cute Halloween cookies for dessert! You can also add some mummy dogs and pumpkin eggs or this fun monster munch popcorn mix!

Storage

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator for 3-4 days. Usually, we microwave leftovers, but the crust may get a little soft. You can warm it up in the oven to keep the crust crispy.

Notes

Use an 80/20 blend of ground beef for best results. You can use your favorite recipe here if you want.
Be gentle when mixing the meat mixture so it won’t turn out too tough.
I added a thin layer of ketchup for the top, but you don’t want a heavy sauce for this loaf since the dough won’ t stick.
I recommend testing the temperature at around 50 minutes of baking. If it’s close to being done, you can add the dough. If it’s not near 160, let it cook longer before adding the dough.
