Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients for this cheesesteak sloppy Joe recipe. Here’s a quick overview — the full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Ground beef — I use lean ground beef or extra lean beef.
  • Onion — Yellow onion or white onion for flavor
  • Green bell pepper — for flavor
  • Cheese — I use a mix of white American cheese and mozzarella cheese or Provolone cheese for that cheesy goodness.
  • Ketchup — for sloppy Joe flavor
  • Mustard — use classic yellow mustard here
  • Worcestershire sauce — adds umami flavor without using beef broth
  • Seasonings — sea salt, black pepper and garlic powder
  • Buns — brioche buns or regular hamburger buns. You can toast the buns for extra flavor and texture or serve them soft out of the package.
  • Butter or olive oil — for frying the onions and peppers

How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes

First, sautรฉ the onions in a large skillet in butter or olive oil until soft. I use a cast iron skillet, but any large frying pan will work. Then, add the peppers. You want to get a slight caramelization on the onions for extra flavor.

Brown the ground beef, and drain grease if you need to. Then add the ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings.

add ketchup, mustard and seasonings to ground beef.

I like to add cheese to the meat mixture before serving. This helps to thicken the sloppy joe meat and make it easier to handle. The Joes will still be sloppy, but cheesy, too!

You can add more cheese to the meat before serving or add a slice or 2 on top of the meat when you make the sandwiches. I’ve made these both ways, and they are good either way.

Storage

Store leftover sloppy joe meat in an airtight container in your fridge for 3-4 days. You can reheat it in your microwave or on the stove. You can also freeze the meat in a freezer bag or freezer safe container for up to 3 months.

Recipe Tip

Add a little water or beef broth if you want more sauce or if the mixture seems dry.

Use your favorite cheese here — or Cheez Whiz if you prefer that.
