Though garlic bread is a classic side dish, you can eat it all by itself or with just a little bit of marinara sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

You only need a few basic ingredients to make your own garlic bread. You can find them in your grocery store or online.

  • Loaf of bread — French bread or Texas toast or any thick sliced bread
  • Butter — I use room temperature salted butter. But unsalted butter works too
  • Garlic powder
  • Garlic cloves — finely chopped minced garlic, for extra garlic flavor
  • Parmesan cheese — grate your own or buy it grated
  • Dried parsley — adds flavor

How to Make Garlic Bread with Regular Bread

First, you need to make the garlic butter spread. If you need to soften the stick of butter, you can microwave it for about 15 seconds or so. It needs to be spreadable but not melted.

Chop the garlic cloves. Then, mix the softened butter, garlic powder, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese and dried parsley in a small bowl.

Next, preheat your oven to 400 degrees f. Slice the loaf of French bread into 1-inch slices, and arrange the slices on a rimmed baking dish.

If you are using regular sliced bread, just place the slices on the baking dish.

Spoon about a tablespoon or 2 of the butter and garlic mixture on top of the bread slices. Then, spread the mixture evenly over the bread.

You can go back and add more garlic butter if you need to.

Sprinkle a little more grated Parm on the garlic toast slices if you like. Then, pop the baking sheet into the preheated oven.

Cook Time

Bake the garlic toast for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.

You can bake the bread a little longer for crispier garlic bread — just keep an eye it so the bread doesn’t get too crispy!

Variations

To make garlic bread with fresh garlic only, use 3-4 whole cloves of garlic.

If you want to make garlic bread with garlic powder only, use 2 teaspoons of garlic powder.

For garlic cheese bread, add extra Parmesan cheese along with shredded cheddar cheese. You can also substitute the butter with olive oil or mayonnaise.

You can use fresh parsley or any other fresh herbs like rosemary instead of dried parsley.

How to Store

Store leftover slices of bread in an airtight container or a zip top baggie. You can also wrap the bread in plastic wrap. Keep in the fridge for 3 to 5 days.
