I make these easy chocolate cake mix cookies whenever we’re craving a sweet treat. These are some of the easiest cookies on the planet.

My daughter recently got braces and is still at the everything-needs-to-be-soft-enough-to-eat stage. And, that’s never a problem when you make cookies from cake mix! Seriously, these are the softest chewy cookies ever!

Cookies from a boxed mix are quick to make. And, this makes them a perfect choice when you need a quick and easy treat or dessert.

Like when you decide to surprise your kids with freshly baked cookies at the last minute, but you don’t have enough flour. True story!

Ingredients

You only need 4 ingredients for this chocolate cake mix cookies recipe. You can find them in your grocery store if you don’t have them at home. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Eggs — large eggs
  • Box of chocolate cake mix — any brand or type of chocolate
  • Vegetable oil or butter
  • Milk — I use 2 percent milk
  • m&m candy — optional for decoration, if desired

Normally, boxed mixes call for using oil, but you can use butter for cake mix cookies too!

How to Make Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies

Cookies from cake mix are super easy to make.  It’s just like using a mix for a cake, only the ingredients are slightly different.

First, add your eggs to a large mixing bowl. Then, beat them slightly. This prevents you from over mixing the cookie dough.

Next, add your cake mix, melted butter, and milk. Mix well until combined. You can use an electric mixer or stand mixer or a spoon.

With a tablespoon or small spoon or small cookie scoop, scoop the batter and drop on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, or a silicone baking mat.

I usually like to keep them small, so only use a cookie scoop if it’s rather tiny. Leave about 2 inches of room between each batter ball.

I kept these treats super simple. Right before they went into the oven, I added some m&m candies to the top.

Sometimes, I use peanut butter m&ms. They add a nice pop of color and the kids love the taste of chocolate and peanut butter!

You can use different flavors and decorate these easy cake cookies for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Halloween, fall, St Patrick’s Day and Easter!

Baking Time

You bake these fudgy cookies for about 10 to 12 minutes, or just when the edges start to firm up and the tops crack a little. Be careful not to over bake them.

When they’re done baking, remove the warm cookies from the oven and allow them to cool slightly at room temperature. Then, allow them to cool completely on a wire rack or cooling rack.

Mmmm — soft, chewy chocolate cookies are perfect for dunking in a tall glass of cold milk. Yum!

Variations and Substitutions

The easiest way to customize these easy cookies is to change whatever boxed cake mix you use. The basic recipe stays the same regardless of what flavor of cake mix you choose.

Try dark chocolate fudge cookies, red velvet cookies, or even German chocolate cookies!

Another great way to change things up is to add your favorite toppings! Semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and peanut butter chips go well with chocolate. A dash of powdered sugar adds extra sweetness!

Chocolate candy, such as m&m’s, usually come in different colors perfect for giving your cookies a seasonal flare! I like to throw on some fun sprinkles as well.

Storage

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. They keep fresh for about 5 days. To keep the cookies nice and soft, throw a piece of white sliced bread into the container–it really works! You can freeze the cookies in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
