I make these easy chocolate cake mix cookies whenever we're craving a sweet treat. These are some of the easiest cookies on the planet.

My daughter recently got braces and is still at the everything-needs-to-be-soft-enough-to-eat stage. And, that's never a problem when you make cookies from cake mix! Seriously, these are the softest chewy cookies ever!

Cake mix cookies are also incredibly quick to make. And, this makes them a perfect choice when you need a quick and easy treat or dessert.

As much as I love baking cookies from scratch, like Double Chocolate Chip Cookies and Best Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, sometimes you need a shortcut.

Like when you decide to surprise your kids with freshly baked cookies at the last minute, but you don't have enough flour. True story!

    Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients for this chocolate cake mix cookies recipe. You can find them in your grocery store if you don't have them at home.

    • Eggs
    • Box chocolate cake mix -- any brand or type of chocolate
    • Vegetable oil or butter
    • Milk -- I use 2 percent
    • m&m candy for decoration, if desired

Normally, boxed mixes call for using oil, but you can use butter for cake mix cookies too!

How to Make Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies

Like I said, cake mix chocolate cookies, or actually, any cake mix cookies are super easy to make.  It's just like using a boxed cake mix for a cake, only the ingredients are slightly different.

First, add your eggs to a large mixing bowl. Then, beat them slightly.

beat eggs with fork in mixing bowl

Next, add your cake mix, melted butter, and milk. Mix well until combined.

With a tablespoon or small spoon or small cookie scoop, scoop the batter and drop on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, or a silicone baking mat.

I usually like to keep these cake mix cookies small, so only use a cookie scoop if it's rather tiny.

Leave about 2 inches of room between each batter ball.

I kept these chocolate cookies super simple. Right before they went into the oven, I added some m&m candies to the top.

Sometimes, I use peanut butter m&ms. They add a nice pop of color and the kids love the taste of chocolate and peanut butter!

You can use different flavors and decorate these easy cookies for Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween, fall, St Patrick's Day and Easter!

    Baking Time

You bake these cake mix cookies for about 10 to 12 minutes, or just when the edges start to firm up and the tops crack a little.

When they're done baking, remove the chocolate cookies from the oven and allow them to cool slightly at room temperature. Then, allow them to cool completely on a wire rack or cooling rack.

Mmmm -- soft, chewy chocolate cookies are perfect for dunking in a tall glass of cold milk. Yum!

    Variations

There are so many fun ways to mix up these cake mix cookies!

Obviously, the easiest way to customize cake mix cookies is to change whatever boxed cake mix you use. The basic recipe stays the same regardless of what flavor of cake mix you choose.

Keep it simple with different cake mixes like yellow cake mix, white cake mix, or strawberry cake mix cookies. Or, get a bit fancy with dark chocolate fudge cake mix cookies, red velvet cookies, or even German chocolate cake mix cookies!

Another great way to change things up is to add your favorite toppings! Semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and peanut butter chips go well with most cookie flavors. A dash of powdered sugar goes a long way too!

Chocolate candy, such as m&m's, usually come in different colors perfect for giving your cookies a seasonal flare! I like to throw on some fun sprinkles as well.

    How to Store

Store your chocolate cake mix cookies in an airtight container.

To keep the cookies nice and soft, throw a piece of white sliced bread into the container--it really works!

Do you just mix well by hand or use a mixer?

I just mix it well with a large spoon, but you could use a hand mixer if you wanted to.
