Get ready for back to school with this easy dorm desk organizer hack. It’s perfect for college students and high school kids too!

My oldest baby is headed back to college soon, and I thought it would be fun to surprise her with a gift that’s both fun and practical. Trust me, those kinds of gifts aren’t always so easy to achieve, but I think she’ll really enjoy this one!

Unlike me, this kid excells in math and science, and she’s also super organized. She even helped me clean out and organize my home office this summer, which wasn’t an easy task. So as a way of giving back, I bought her a bunch of school supplies and a small three-drawer cart to house them. Then, I assembled an easy dorm desk organizer.

That’s the one thing about college life — there’s never enough room, so you have to get creative and make the most of the space you have.

We were out buying school supplies for the younger bunch at Walmart, and we found some huge back to school pallets filled with Ghostbusters-themed products. My kids and I love these movies, and the oldest one is a huge fan. I remember when the original movies came out, and the kids and I enjoyed watching them again on TV this summer. We’re planning to see the new movie soon!

So, I picked up some assorted candy and Ghostbusters school supplies to include in the desk organizer. The candy was near the candy aisle, and the school supplies were in the front of the store in the back-to-school section.

My daughter loves just about anything chocolate, so I chose the Mixed Mini Variety Bag, a large bag of  M&M’s® and a Milk Chocolate M&M’s® Bottle. Be sure to look for the in-store coupon for $.75 off of 1 bottle in stores through September 30th.

Somehow, a bag of Milky Way® Midnight Minis found their way into the cart, as well. I’m a huge fan of dark chocolate, so these may or may not be included in the college care package!

Putting everything together was super easy.

How to Make an Easy Dorm Desk Organizer

Supplies needed:

  • Small plastic three-drawer organizer
  • Labels or sticky notes
  • Pens and pencils — dry erase markers, permanent markers, ball point pens, highlighters, pencils
  • Paper products — index cards, notebooks, sticky notes
  • Miscellaneous supplies — staples, paper clips, erasers, USB drives, tape

I also included some nail polish and candy just as treats!

Instead of using permanent labels, I stuck some sticky notes to the drawers and had one of the younger kids write directly on the paper. I figured that my daughter could rearrange the drawers and make different labels later on.

Then, we just filled up the cart with the school supplies and candy.  Easy peasy!

Organizing school supplies doesn’t have to be complicated, especially for college kids. This particular organizer is small enough to fit on top of a student desk, so there’s still plenty of room to work. But, it’s large enough to hold a sizeable amount of stuff.

Easy Dorm Desk Organizer

I’m pretty sure that my daughter will love this easy dorm desk organizer, especially when she sees the treats inside. She has a thing for collecting various pens and pencils, and she definitely won’t mind the candy!

Are your kids getting ready to go back to school? Any plans to see the new Ghostbusters movie, or have you already seen it? Let me know!

Have a super day, friends!
