This easy herb butter recipe makes savory homemade compound butter with fresh herbs and garlic. Perfect for cooking steak, chicken, pasta, vegetables, eggs and delicious on homemade bread!

My son started making this easy recipe for herb butter last summer. Originally, he wanted to add a little extra flavor to our Blackstone steaks, but we started adding this flavored butter to many of our favorite recipes.
Honestly, the flavor from the fresh herbs really does make a difference, and the process of making herb compound butter is really simple. By the way, compound butter is just the term for adding different flavors to butter. If you’ve never tried making your own, now is a great time to start!

Why you’ll love this easy recipe!

It’s a great way to use up fresh herbs from your herb garden or leftovers that you didn’t use in a recipe.
We use a combo of fresh and dried herbs plus a little lemon juice to brighten up the flavor.
It costs a lot less to make your own!

What You Need
Here are the main ingredients for garlic herb butter. Full amounts are listed in the printable recipe card below.
- Butter — either salted butter or unsalted butter works. You can even start with homemade butter.
- Fresh herbs — parsley
- Garlic cloves
- Lemon juice
- Seasonings — Italian seasoning, black pepper and sea salt
How to Make Herb Butter
First, whip the butter in the bowl of a stand mixer using the whisk attachment. Then, add the chopped herbs. Spoon the compounded butter into a piece of plastic wrap, or parchment paper, and twist at both ends. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm enough to slice.

Quick Tip
We like to use a food processor to quickly chop the parsley, but you can easily use a knife.

Our Favorite Ways to Use It
Add this flavored butter to grilled steak and chicken or roast chicken. I also add a little to pasta and scrambled eggs. And, it is absolutely amazing on homemade bread or a baked potato!
Variations
You can use your favorite herbs or a blend of herbs here. We like tarragon, thyme, rosemary or basil.
If you don’t want to wrap the butter, you can simple store it in a bowl or use a butter mold. We do this to make lamb butter at Easter.
Storage
Store the butter in an airtight container in your refrigerator where it keeps fresh for 1-2 weeks. You can freeze it for up to 3 months for best flavor. I recommend slicing it before freezing so it’s easy to use what you need.
