We're serious Mexican food lovers here, and we go through taco mix like crazy. If you love Mexican food as much as we do, this recipe is for you!

Growing up, we always used the little seasoning packets whenever we had tacos for dinner. I did too, until I realized those packets were filled with preservatives we didn't need.

Not to mention that those packets really aren't cheap, especially when you cook Mexican food as much as we do! I started making my own DIY Mexican seasoning mix, and it's so much better than the packets!

How to Make your Own Taco Seasoning

This is one of the easiest recipes ever, and you only need 7 ingredients to make it. The nice thing about this mix is that you can make just one serving or several to save for later.

You can also add or subtract spices to get the taste you love best. This isn't super spicy, but a dash or two of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes will fix that!

    What's in the Mix:

    • Salt -- I recommend sea salt or kosher salt
    • Black pepper
    • Cumin
    • Dried minced onions
    • Garlic powder
    • Ancho chile powder -- you can use regular chile powder if you have it
    • Smoked paprika -- use regular paprika if that's what you have
layered spices in a glass jar

All you do is add everything to a bowl or jar. If you want to make a bunch of it, use a jar or a plastic container, and keep it tightly covered.

Then, you just shake it all up! It doesn't get any easier than that!

shake spices in glass jar to blend

That's all you need to do for DIY taco mix. Of course, this seasoning blend isn't just for beef tacos.

We use it for chicken enchiladas, pork carnitas, taco pasta, Doritos casserole, salsa verde chicken and salsa chicken. Actually, you can use it for any Mexican style dish.
