This Strawberry Banana Protein Smoothie recipe made with peanut powder and without yogurt is a delicious protein packed plant based breakfast or afternoon snack. Use oat milk or almond milk to keep this fruit smoothie dairy free!
We just got a new blender — a Ninja Pro — and the kids and I have been making some of our favorite easy healthy smoothie recipes again. This strawberry banana peanut powder smoothie, or the Skinny Monkey, is super easy to make and perfect as a grab and go breakfast or as a quick afternoon pick-me-up or post workout snack!
I used to make a breakfast smoothie with peanut butter, milk, strawberries and bananas — the Funky Monkey. The Skinny Monkey breakfast smoothie aka strawberry banana protein smoothie is basically the lightened up version.
It’s dairy free, plant based, gluten free and has added protein. It’s also lower in calories and fat. Plus, it’s absolutely delicious! Table of Contents
Ingredients
You only need 4 simple ingredients to make this strawberry banana fruit smoothie:
- Strawberries — frozen works best, but fresh are fine
- Bananas
- Oat milk or almond milk — use regular milk if you want
- Peanut butter powder — I used PB2, but any brand is fine
The honey is optional. Depending on which brand of peanut butter powder you use, you may not want it. It adds a little bit of sweetness, but it’s not necessary. In fact, we skipped it the last time we made the smoothie, and it was fine.
How to Make a Strawberry Banana Protein Smoothie
This smoothie recipe is super easy to make. All you do is add all of the ingredients to the blender.
I usually add the frozen strawberries first. Then, I just toss everything else in.
Next, place the lid on the blender. Then, blend until everything is well combined.
You may want to scrape the sides of the blender with a spatula to make sure the peanut powder isn’t sticking. Then, blend again until the drink is nice and smooth.
Variations
There are a couple ways to customize this healthy strawberry banana smoothie to your liking.
For a thicker smoothie, start off with only 1/2 to 1 cup of milk. After blending, add more milk if necessary. Cottage cheese and nonfat plain Greek yogurt are also a great idea for getting healthy fats while making a more creamy smoothie.
A classic strawberry banana smoothie tastes delicious, but you can add other fruits or veggies if you’d like. Adding raw spinach is a great way to get some leafy greens without making a fully green smoothie.
Blueberries, almond butter, flax seeds, and chia seeds are also delicious ideas!
Use whatever milk you prefer. Oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and regular cow milk all work well in this strawberry protein smoothie. If you use non dairy milk and vegan protein powder, then this delicious drink is vegan.
Instead of peanut powder, use your favorite protein powder. Using vanilla protein powder is a great way to get a little extra sweetness without the added sugar!
Fresh or Frozen Fruit
For the best tasting smoothie, I recommend mixing fresh fruit and frozen fruit. We use fresh bananas and frozen strawberries, but you can use a frozen banana and fresh strawberries too.
How Much Protein
How much peanut or protein powder you use depends on your own taste buds and needs. If you’re just looking for an easy breakfast or quick healthy eating alternative, then you don’t need much protein powder, or any at all.
If you’re trying to replace protein shakes in your diet, then you can make this a high protein smoothie by adding more peanut powder to get to as many grams of protein as you need.

You’re welcome, Miz Helen — Glad you like it! 🙂
I definitely need some in mine! 😉
Here's my daily ritual. I could mix my drink with a smoothie, but I like my smoothies more fruity, so I prefer to mix 2+ tablespoons of green drink into about a quart of water. I just take Green energy drinks for about an hour every day after work.
How did you know that I need a little skinny in my life right about now?
This looks and sounds so refreshing ♥

Thanks, Dixya. I'm in love with this powder, and we even bought some more.
Hopefully, it'll get there soon since it's good stuff!
Thanks, Stephanie. We love the new, improved version! 🙂
This smoothie looks absolutely delicious! I love when I can create a lighter recipe from a family favorite without sacrificing flavor. Yum! (client)
I haven't seen any Peanut Butter powder here on the West coast. Darn it.
Hi! I’ve just recently seen the Jiff brand. PB2, is another option. 🙂
