So first off, this puppy chow recipe is for people! Some people call this delicious treat muddy buddies, and while we make the classic muddy buddies recipe throughout the year, I like to make different variations for various holidays.

This candy cane puppy chow is very similar to the original recipe. I kept the peanut butter because I didn’t want it to be overly sweet. The flavor is still minty fresh, but nicely balanced.

Why you’ll love this easy recipe!

This easy treat comes together quickly and is super simple to make. Plus it has plenty of peppermint flavor to get you in the holiday spirit!

rice chex, powdered sugar, peanut butter, white chocolate, butter, peppermint.

What You’ll Need

Here are the basic ingredients. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Rice chex — or a generic version
  • Peanut butter — the creamy kinds works best
  • Powdered sugar
  • White chocolate — baking chips or almond bark or candy melts
  • Butter — I use salted but unsalted butter is fine
  • Peppermint extract — not essential oil
  • Candy canes — either crushed or you can crush them up in a large freezer bag

How to Make Peppermint Puppy Chow

First, melt the baking chips, butter and peanut butter in a large bowl, and stir until smooth and creamy. We use the microwave for this. Stir in the extract and cereal. Then, transfer to a large freezer bag, add the powdered sugar and candy canes, and shake until coated.

Storage

Store the muddy buddies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can store it in the fridge if your house is warm, but it may get a little soft. You can freeze this snack for up to 3 months, and it will stay nice and crunchy.

Quick Tips

To make mixing easier, place half of the powdered sugar in a gallon freezer bag, add the coated cereal, and top with remaining powdered sugar before shaking. Kids love to help with this part!

Microwave chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in increments so it doesn’t seize. Follow the directions on the bag for each manufacturer’s recommendation.

Variation

You can omit the peanut butter and the peppermint extract. Just mix the melted chocolate with the cereal and crushed candy canes. It will be very sweet!
