If you have ever been to an American Thanksgiving, you have probably tasted classic green bean casserole. My family’s version of this classic side dish is slightly different than the one you see everywhere today.

My grandma always made plain green beans for Thanksgiving until she found a booklet with a recipe for Campbells green bean casserole with cream of chicken soup or mushroom soup. It’s now one of our favorite side dishes.

I love the flavor you get with chicken soup instead of mushroom soup. This recipe calls for a little less liquid, so the casserole is rich and creamy.

I’m not sure if this green bean bake is the original recipe created by Dorcas Reilly of Campbell Soup Company, but this simple recipe is absolutely delicious! Tender green beans and crispy seasoned onions in a flavorful cream sauce — a must make for any holiday meal!

Campbells Green Bean Casserole Recipe Ingredients

You should be able to locate these simple ingredients in your local grocery store. Full amounts are in the printable recipe card below.

  • Can Campbell’s cream of chicken soup — or cream of mushroom soup. Cream of celery soup is also a good option.
  • Milk — to thin out the condensed soup
  • Soy sauce — I usually use less sodium. Worcestershire sauce is a great substitute
  • Crispy fried onions –French’s brand or any brand. Look for them in the spice aisle or condiments aisle or canned food aisle.
  • Green beans — I use frozen green beans, but you can use canned green beans (2 cans) like the traditional recipe or fresh green beans.
  • Black pepper — I usually throw in some garlic powder for extra flavor, but this is optional. There is no need to add salt to this classic recipe since there is plenty of salt between the onions, soy sauce and soup.

How to Make Green Bean Casserole with Cream of Chicken Soup

First, mix the soup with the milk and soy sauce in a mixing bowl. It may look a little lumpy, but that is fine.

mix soup and milk in mixing bowl.

Next, add the green beans, a half cup onions and pepper. Mix the soup mixture until everything is well combined.

Next, spread the green bean mixture evenly into a prepared baking dish.

Cooking Time

Bake the casserole uncovered for 25 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Top the casserole with the remaining french fried onions, and bake for another 5 minutes or until onions are golden brown. Total cook time is about 30 minutes.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Refrigerate leftover casserole in an airtight container or in the baking dish covered with plastic wrap. Reheat the the casserole in the oven on low heat until heated through for best results. It takes about 10-15 minutes.

Reheat individual portions in the microwave. The onions will get soft, but it will still be delicious! Although you can freeze this casserole, the creamy sauce may separate when reheating.

Helpful Tips

To make green bean casserole ahead of time, leave out the top layer of onions, and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Add onions right before baking.

If you want to use fresh green beans, blanch them in boiling water until slightly soft before adding to the casserole.

Stir in some Parmesan cheese or cheddar cheese for a cheesy casserole. Add cooked crumbled bacon for extra flavor.

You can use a 1-2 quart casserole dish for this recipe. If you want to double it, use a 3 quart casserole or 13×9 baking dish.

Always had this growing up! This is just better! Green beans are the main flavor and not the creamed soup! Making it this way from now on!5 stars
