This pressure cooker jasmine rice tastes exactly like the kind you get at your favorite Thai restaurant — maybe even better. Once you learn to make rice in the Instant Pot, you won’t want to make it any other way–not even in a rice cooker!

Jasmine rice was the very first recipe I made when I got my new Instant Pot over 5 years ago. I actually chose to make it because I figured it would be easy enough, and it wouldn’t be huge waste of time or money if I messed it up. Back then I was completely new to the world of pressure cooking, and I wanted to play it safe.

I chose wisely. The rice was amazing, especially since I grew up on instant rice and never really mastered the art of cooking rice any other way. This pressure cooker version of jasmine rice is even better than what we get at our favorite Thai place because it’s homemade.

We make this recipe for Jasmine rice at least once or twice a week (My daughter can eat rice every day!) and this fragrant jasmine rice turns out perfect every single time. It’s delicious with Swiss Steak!Trust me — it is an absolutely foolproof recipe!

Instant Pot Jasmine Rice Ingredients

You only need a few ingredients for this Instant Pot jasmine rice recipe. You can get them online or in your grocery store. Exact amounts are in the recipe card below.

  • Jasmine rice — I use white jasmine long-grain rice for this recipe.
  • Sea salt — adds flavor to the rice. It’s best to season rice when cooking, just as you do for pasta.
  • Water — cold water to cook the rice and help build pressure
  • Olive oil — helps prevent the rice from sticking

You may also want to buy a big fine mesh strainer, which really helps when rinsing rice.

Rice to Water Ratio

I use a ratio of 1 part rice to 1 part water or 1 cup of rice to 1 cup water — equal parts, or 1:1.

Some recipes call for more water, but I think the texture is perfect when the ratio is equal — not too dry, not too gooey.

It has just the right amount of sticky texture so the rice won’t fall off of your fork.

How to Make Jasmine Rice in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Making rice in the Instant Pot is super easy– no stirring or watching the pot needed. I definitely recommend rinsing it well before you add it to the pot, though.

First, measure the rice in a dry measuring cup. Then, dump it in the strainer, and rinse it well with cold running water. When the water runs clear, turn the water off.

My daughter is now in charge of this part — She loves swirling the rice around under the water!

Next, I add the rinsed rice and a little salt to the pressure cooker. I also add some olive oil, too.

Pour the water into the inner pot, and swirl the rice and water together with a fork or spoon.

How Long to Cook Jasmine Rice in Instant Pot

The rice is done after cooking on high pressure for 4 minutes and a natural release of 10 minutes, for a total cooking time of 14 minutes.

And that’s it, you guys! Perfect jasmine rice every time! Just stir the rice, and serve.

This jasmine rice Instant Pot recipe is for 2 cups of jasmine rice, but the cook time is the same for 3 cups of rice or 1 cup of rice.

Note that while there is a rice setting on the Instant Pot, I don’t use it, as it’s less exact and sometimes results in mushy rice.

Variations

You can make various types of rice using the Instant Pot.

This recipe uses white jasmine rice, which is a type of long-grain white rice. You can make basmati rice or plain white long grain rice using the same recipe. brown jasmine rice in the Instant Pot, but it will take longer to cook.

When cooking your rice, use broth instead of water, or a mixture of both, to add a bit of extra flavor.

Vegetable broth or chicken broth will work best. Don’t worry, it won’t detract from the natural flavor of the rice at all!

How to Store and Reheat Cooked Rice

Store any leftover rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Leftovers can be refrigerated for 3-4 days.

Do not leave rice sitting out at room temperature for more than an hour, for safety. It is safe to reheat rice! If microwaving, add a little water if the rice is dry, and microwave until it’s steaming hot or 165 degrees f.

Mix the rice around and heat in increments so that it’s heated completely.

You can also steam or stir fry leftover rice over the stove. Just make sure it’s piping hot!

Expert Tips

Follow these tips to make perfect jasmine rice in the Instant Pot every time.

  1. Use a dry measuring cup to measure the rice evenly. Do not use the cup that comes with the pressure cooker as it is not accurate.
  2. Use a fine-mesh strainer to rinse rice well before cooking.
  3. Use a wet measuring cup to measure the cups of water evenly, and use 1 cup of water to 1 cup of rice.
  4. Add a little olive oil or vegetable oil when cooking to prevent rice from sticking.
  5. Remove rice and serve immediately after cooking. Do not use the keep warm setting as the rice will stick to the bottom of the pot.

Notes

Recipe has been made and tested in the 6-quart Instant Pot electric pressure cooker and the 8 quart without changing ingredients or time.
There is only 4 minutes of cooking time, but this recipe needs 10 minutes of pressure release for a total of 14 minutes, plus time for the pot to come to pressure.
Always use 1 cup water to 1 cup rice. The cook time is the same no matter how much rice you make.
Always use care when releasing pressure — I use a long wooden spoon to turn the pressure valve.
Don’t leave the pot on the warm setting as the rice may stick to the bottom. Turn it off and serve right away.

I tried the recipes and my instant pot failed me. Didn’t reach pressure cook phase as I noticed steam leaking. I have a barely used seal. Reset the lid added a half cup of water, but then got the burn notice.

All in all, there was no water left. Rice was mostly done. Next time will use more water and contact the manufacturer about my lid not sealing properly.

    Thanks!

    1. Dee says:

So sorry to hear this. It definitely sounds like a problem with the seal if it never reached pressure.

  2. NoSweatGuv says:

What is the point of instapot having a “RICE” function – but nobody uses it!?!?!
    Doesn’t the function work?
So many articles on cooking something so simple, yet…. thousands of different opinions!

    1. Dee says:

The Rice button is just a preset. You can use it, but using the custom time gives more accurate results.

  3. Alejandra says:

I love this recipe! So easy and simple!5 stars

    1. Dee says:

Thank you so much, Alejandra. I’m glad you like it!

  4. Jenn Heisserer says:

I have a slightly dumb question but am somewhat new to the instant pot game. When you set your high pressure settings and cook time, theres an option to “keep warm” on or off. Do you adjust this? It automatically is set to on if not changed. Thanks! Looking forward to trying this out tonight!

    1. Dee says:

I usually turn the pot off after it’s done. I find the rice tends to stick if it stays on keep warm, but maybe that’s just me. Hope you like it!

  5. beverly f kemp says:

I add Italian seasoning to my rice

  6. Janine says:

I have a question….why do all of the rice recipes never use the rice function on the pot?

    1. Dee says:

I’m not sure about other people, but I personally find this timing makes perfectly cooked rice. 🙂

  7. Gabrielle Alvarez says:

Maybe a dumb question but when it says 4 minute cook time, is that 4 times minutes or 4 minutes after the instant pot starts its timer? I’m new to the pot and it’s driving me a little crazy to wait 20+ minutes just for the “instant” part to start!

    1. Dee says:

NOT a dumb question! 🙂 The cook time begins when the pot reaches pressure and starts counting down. Then, 10 minutes release. So, it’s really not instant, but when you cook roasts and such, it’s a lot faster this way.

    2. Monica salinas says:

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. All the time I follow instructions. Never see count down and always had the FOOD BURN sign 😩even I add extra cup of water.

    3. Dee says:

Hmm. It sounds like maybe a bad seal or faulty pot?

    4. Morgan says:

I had to always turn off the “keep warm” function for things not to burn/ stick. Hope this helps!

  8. Ileana says:

Love love love this recipe! I made it a couple months ago and loved it. Now it’s the only rice recipe I use! Turns out absolutely perfect every time. Plus the flavor is amazing!5 stars
